RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man charged in the deaths of his wife and 2-year-old daughter attempted to kill himself Tuesday night, but was unsuccessful, according to a report released Thursday.

According to police, Elhadji Diop, 53, had self-inflicted lacerations and had ingested toxic substances when he was taken to WakeMed from his home Tuesday evening.

According to a 911 call, a concerned relative living in Senegal saw a Facebook post by Diop. She contacted another relative in New York City, who called police there. NYPD relayed the message to Raleigh.

When officers conducted a welfare check at the home in the 5900 block of Farm Gate Road they found Aminata Drame, 40, and her daughter, Fatim Diop, dead in the home.

Elhadji Diop was taken to WakMed with serious injuries.

Raleigh police officers will formally charge Elhadji Diop with the murder of his wife and daughter when he is released from the hospital.

Thursday night, family members held a wake to remember and pray for Drame, who friends knew as Amy.

Friends said the family is originally from Senegal and the local Senegalese community has been rocked by the news of the deaths.

A funeral for Drame and Fatim Diop will be held Friday.
