Report: 25 people taken to hospital after canopy structure collapses at western NC high school

Posted October 3, 2015

— Several injuries were reported Saturday afternoon when a concrete canopy structure collapsed at North Iredell High School, according to WBTV.

Emergency crews responded to the school, on Raider Road in Olin, at about 2 p.m. after a large box truck ran into the canopy structure. Students were at the school for a band competition.

Authorities said 25 people , including some students, were taken to local hospitals. Their names and conditions have not been released. As many as 20 children were trapped for a short time, officials said.

It's unclear what caused the box truck to hit the canopy. No other information about the incident was immediately available.

This was found on FB - many serious injuries - A GO FUND ME PAGE - has been set up.....please read

On the 3rd of October, 2015, we set out for the first competition of the season. Everyone was excited and buzzing around ready to compete, but when we arrived at the competition; tragedy struck our band. An awning at the school collapsed on a group of students underneath. 18 band members were sent to the hospital for various injuries. A couple hours after this happened, we were informed that a lot of our friends had more serious injuries than we had previously thought: one girl had her leg amputated, multiple people had broken feet, legs and pelvises, and a lot of severe head injuries. As one of the lead drum majors of the band, I am asking you to donate to our fund to help pay for the families that are having to stay with their children to cover food, gas, hotel rooms and any salaries lost for taking any unpaid personal days off from work.

    * "when I backed into it in a rental truck..."

I saw a picture of the rental truck that was involved in this accident. My guess is that the driver was not familiar with the height of the rear of the truck. After looking only for obstacles at car-level, I nearly took out a tree when I backed into in a rental truck years ago.

My best thoughts are with the injured people and the driver.
