Rental truck hits, kills Durham pedestrian

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a rental truck in north Durham Friday afternoon, police said.

DURHAM, N.C. — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a rental truck in north Durham Friday afternoon, police said.

The pedestrian, identified as 18-year-old Nickey Cureton, of Durham, was hit shortly before 12:45 p.m. when a southbound U-Haul truck ran off the right side of North Roxboro Street near the intersection of East Britania Avenue, police said.

Police said John Gieser, 58, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, was driving the truck when he hit Cureton. Gieser was charged with failure to maintain lane control and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
