Remember 'Ladyhawke?' Natural sciences museum to show '80s flick on big screen

To mark the last Friday of July, as part of its Final Friday series, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences will screen "Ladyhawke," the 1985 (could you call it classic?) that stars Matthew Broderick as petty thief Philippe "The Mouse" Gaston, Etienne Navarre as Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer as Lady Isabeau.

Why Ladyhawke? As it happens, solar eclipses play a big role in the film. And, unless you've been under a rock this summer, you probably know that parts of North Carolina will experience a total eclipse on Aug. 21. Here, in the Triangle, we'll see a partial eclipse (and Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill is hosting an event to celebrate it that day).

So, in addition to the movie, the downtown Raleigh museum's Final Friday event also will include more information about the Great Solar Eclipse. Visitors also can test their skill at turtle-glider jousting, enjoy live music, eat some pork BBQ or meatballs and enjoy some local craft beers.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The movie begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. After the movie, museum ornithologist John Gerwin will talk about what the movie got right or wrong, scientifically speaking.

I'd say these events are probably best for tweens and up. "Ladyhawke" is rated PG-13. So be sure to check a parent's guide to make sure it's right for your family.
