SALISBURY, N.C. — A North Carolina House member drawn into the same district as a Republican colleague during the latest remapping says he'll run instead for the Senate next year.
Rep. Carl Ford of Rowan County announced Tuesday he would seek the seat in the redrawn 33rd Senate District, where no senator currently lives.
Ford and Rep. Larry Pittman of Cabarrus County live in the proposed 83rd House District and otherwise could face each other in a primary.
The Republican-controlled General Assembly drew new House and Senate maps to comply with a federal court order and approved them last week. GOP leaders said legal requirements designed to minimize district boundaries crossing county lines forced them to put two incumbents I some districts.
A three-judge panel still must sign off on the maps.
