RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Supreme Court has agreed to expedite its re-hearing of lawsuits against the state's Republican-drawn 2011 voting maps.

In an order released Thursday, Associate Justice Sam Ervin, writing for the court, sets Aug. 31 as the date for oral arguments, with deadlines for briefs and replies through the summer.

On April 20, the U.S. Supreme Court sent back the state Supreme Court's decision to uphold the voting maps, instructing the state court to reconsider its decision in light of the federal court's April ruling on a similar voting rights case in Alabama.

The order from Erwin specifies that "Further briefing and argument shall be limited to the applicability of Alabama Legislative Black Caucus v.

Alabama" to the North Carolina lawsuits.
