I wrote about this concert series a few weeks ago. Red Hat Amphitheater, the outdoor venue in downtown Raleigh, has two free concerts for families this month. One was about two weeks ago. The next one is on Saturday.

My family went to the first one, which was sparsely attended in the afternoon, but continued long after we left around 4 p.m. We still had a good time. My kids enjoyed some free face painting. There were balloon artists and activities from Marbles Kids Museum. And the performers on stage, all community groups, were fun to watch.

On Saturday, the concert is taking a more kindie rock turn, opening with Sandbox (who will be playing Go Ask Mom's event just a few hours before at North Hills) and Mommie, the family band featuring Doug MacMillan from The Connells and other talented musicians. Both will be fun shows!

Sandbox plays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Mommie is on from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The concert wraps up with Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., and Michael Franti and Spearhead from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Doors open at 2 p.m. No tickets are required. It's free!

Take our readers advice and make it an evening by checking out some family-friendly restaurants downtown too.
