Red Cross in urgent need of donors

The American Red Cross issued an emergency call Tuesday for blood and platelet donors of all blood types.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The American Red Cross issued an emergency call Tuesday for blood and platelet donors of all blood types.

Nationwide, donations were down about 10 percent in June, which resulted in 50,000 fewer donations than expected.

“We are counting on generous blood and platelet donors to step up and give now,” said Delisa English, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region.

She said June is a challenging month for blood and platelet donations because regular donors delay giving blood while they adjust to their summer routines. Donations from high schools and colleges drop by more than 80 percent when school is out for the summer.
