Financial donations are the best way to help victims of Hurricane Sandy, according to the American Red Cross.

Monetary donations allow the Red Cross to purchase exact items needed for victims, and product donations can be expensive to transport, a spokeswoman for the Eastern NC Red Cross said.

The Red Cross is also in need of blood donations. About 360 blood drives have been canceled as a result of Hurricane Sandy, a spokeswoman said.

To make a financial donation, visit the American Red Cross's website, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or text the word REDCROSS to 909999 to make a $10 donation. Donations can also be sent to the local chapter at 1102 S. 16th Street, Wilmington, N.C. 28401 or to the national office at P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C., 20013.
To schedule a blood donation, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit their website.
