Records 'shattered' with weekend warmth
While record temperatures are in the forecast for Sunday, both days of the weekend will be downright delightful.
Posted — UpdatedSaturday will peak a full 20 degrees warmer than Friday afternoon, in the upper 60s, and Sunday could see temperatures push close to 80 degrees.
"We don't usually forecast the shattering of record highs, be we're going to do so for Sunday," WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said.
The record for Feb. 12 is 75 degrees, set in 1999. The forecast high for Sunday is 78 in Raleigh.
"The warm air will come rushing in over the weekend," Fishel said.
Saturday will be partly cloudy and temperatures, especially in the Triangle and areas to the south, could climb to 70 degrees.
Skies stay mostly clear for the start of the work week, but the temperatures will plummet again, a 20-degree deficit from Sunday to Monday before the possibility of rain returns midweek.
"We'll take a significant turn in the other direction as we head into Monday," Fishel said, "but in reality, that just puts us back where we ought to be at this time of year."
