Tomato Day is Saturday at the Carrboro Farmers' Market.
Starting at 8:30 a.m., they'll have samples of a a variety of fresh tomatoes (the market has more than 70 kinds!), along with a visit from tomato expert Craig LeHoullier, the author of "Epic Tomatoes," who introduced the Cherokee Purples to the market, one of the most popular heirloon tomatoes sold at the market. Shoppers also can pick up all kinds of tomatoes to take home for recipes like this one.
It's comes via Malik Austria, a local teen whose mother LaShauna Austria is going to be the market's manager. Here's Malik's creation!
Malik's Summer Salsa Recipe
8 to 10 tomatoes, chopped (any variety will do)
5 small jalapeno peppers (optional)
2 medium bell peppers (any variety will do)
½ cup fresh cilantro
4 garlic cloves
1 tablespoon sea salt
1 whole lemon juiced
1 tablespoon ground cumin
Combine all ingredients into a food processor. Pulse for 15 to 20 times until all ingredients are combined and diced.
Add more ingredients for desired taste. Refrigerate salsa prior to serving. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve with tortilla chips.
