Recipe: Kool-Aid play dough

There are many, many recipes out there for homemade play dough, but this is the one that my daughter's preschool teacher recommended (and it's also found on countless sites online). So this is the one that I'll share.

It's very easy. The only hurdle was getting the alum, a powder that is often used in dying clothes. After looking at a couple of stores, I found a box for less than $2 at Kroger in the spice section. 

In my daughter's class, each month's play dough will be a specific color and have a corresponding smell. I signed up for September, which called for yellow play dough with a lemonade scent.

The recipe turned out a great dough that smells faintly of lemonade. I added yellow food coloring to boost the color. 

Here's how it's done: 

2 packages of unsweetened Kool-Aid

Mix together the dry ingredients and then add the following wet ingredients. I boiled the water in a tea kettle, measured it out and then mixed in the oil before I added it to the flour mixture.

2 cups of boiling water

Stir it up until it's cooled down. If you'd like, add some food coloring now. Then take out the dough and knead it for a bit. Let it cool and store it in a sealed container.
