MORRISVILLE, N.C. — The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is moving ahead with a planned renovation of its blue-walled Terminal 1.

Architect Pearce, Brinkley, Cease + Lee on Thursday presented the airport board with a schematic design of the terminal once the $60 million renovation and modernization project is complete. The design includes an in-line bag handling system, a larger security checkpoint that is easier to navigate, concession space before the security area and a new concourse exit area and meet-and-greet space.

The blue walls also will be scrapped for a new exterior design that includes glass and translucent material to allow more natural light in the building and higher ceilings in the ticketing and baggage claim areas.

In May, AirTran and JetBlue, along with other tenants, will move from the central section of Terminal 1, to prepare for the project. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring.
