Raulston Arboretum lines up winter garden events for families

It might be chilly, but that shouldn't keep you indoors. JC Raulston Arboretum, part of N.C. State in Raleigh, has lined up a slate of winter activities for kids and families.

It might be chilly, but that shouldn't keep you indoors. JC Raulston Arboretum, part of N.C. State in Raleigh, has lined up a slate of winter activities for kids and families.

Here's what's happening:

Project BudBurst Kickoff Event, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 31. It's free for all ages. Families can learn more about the project, which involves volunteering for a year to adopt a plant and watch it through 2015 to collect data with regular reports. The data is used by scientists across the nation. They are researching how plants respond to changes in climate.
Winter Walk, 10:30 a.m., Feb. 6. The cost is $5 per child. Spots are limited. Take a hike through the arboretum's winter garden. Then warm up inside with a book and a winter craft. For ages 3 to 5 with a caregiver.
Garden Buds: Colors and Shapes in the Garden, 10 a.m., Feb. 13. For ages 3 to 5 with caregiver. The cost is $12. Spots are limited. The hands-on, seasonal themed preschool program includes activities, art projects, stories and a snack. 
Afternoon Adventure, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Feb. 13. The cost is $1 per family. It's designed for all ages. This is an early release day for Wake County students on a traditional calendar. Spend the afternoon exploring the garden and learning more about what's in season.
Second year YGuides and YPrincess tribes also can register for two special sessions on March 21. The cost is $15 per father/child pair and involves activities and education.
