RALEIGH, N.C. — The exit from Interstate 40 West to Lake Wheeler Road (Exit 297) will be closed for an entire week beginning Sunday night so crews can rebuild the exit ramp.

The ramp closure began at 6 p.m. and will last through at least midnight on Feb. 24, North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said.

Drivers already on I-40 West can get to Lake Wheeler Road by continuing another 2 miles to Gorman Street, exiting the highway and taking I-40 East back to Lake Wheeler.

Local drivers can also access Lake Wheeler Road by other routes, such as Tryon Road, Avent Ferry Road and Centennial Parkway.

Although signs will be in place to alert drivers of the closure and detour, westbound motorists should pay extra attention when approaching Exit 297 in case any vehicles make sudden lane changes because the ramp is closed.

Drivers should also anticipate possible delays when using the detour route and plan their travel time accordingly, officials said.
