— A Raleigh woman got more than $8,000 in Medicaid and food stamp benefits over two years by fraudulently claiming her son lived with her, according to arrest warrants.

Dana Nichole Thomas, 27, of 3212 Enchanting Way, qualified for the benefits by saying that her minor son, Brandon lived with her, the warrants say. Instead, the boy lives in Pennsylvania with his great-grandparents.

According to the warrants, Thomas received $4,696.47 in Medicaid benefits between July 2008 and March 2009 and $3,393 in food stamps between February 2007 and March 2009.

Thomas was being held in the Wake County Jail Sunday under a $12,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance was scheduled for Monday.

CAROLINAROX, I NEVER SAID SHE WAS NOT A CITIZEN, I SAID THEY SHOULD (START CRACKING DOWN ON NON-CITIZENS) AND AS FOR SCREEMING THIS IS NOT SCREEMING, IT JUST MAKES IT EASIER FOR SOME TO READ AND SKIP OVER IT IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO READ IT. THANK YOU

How can SHE use his medicaid? That doesn't check with my mind. Gender and age wouldn't fit at ANY desk (pharmacy) or doctors office if she would try to use it.

Food stamp abuse I can understand (state/county level) that is a frequent issue and that's why people have to go in every year to be evaluated.

In MOST cases you need to PROVE the person is living with you to have benefits funneled to your account. Meaning they need to be AT THE MEETING with county and prove Person b is really person b.

Hmm. Thats ONE small violation they caught. Now get all those on fake ID's and fake SS#'s if you can find the ones living in the middle of Lake Michigan and the Hudson. Good luck!

What REALLY sucks is those of us who could use just a LITTLE extra help a month can't get it. I have to work an extra 36 hrs per week/72hrs per pay period in order to be able to support myself and my son. I pay $200/wk in daycare so I can work. I could legally and truthfully use an extra $75-100/mo to help feed us. I pay for my home. I pay for a decent, safe car to drive to work. I buy our food and feed us the best I can and it sure isn't steak every night and Coke every drink. Everytime I see someone who is blatantly taking advantage of MY money I'm paying in to the system but can't have back and they're not willing to help themselves it makes me seething mad. My favorite is someone who calls 911 that doesn't need 911 and says "I have Medicaid, they'll pay the bill." I want to explode like the truck in the OKC Bombing! It sickens me so bad!

Even though she was caught there is nothing they can do to her, except cut out her checks.

    Tarheelfan13:

It is not prosecuted as a federal crime because the State administers the food stamp program for the feds. Although 100% of the actual food stamps are federal money, the State cost shares with the feds and counties the administrative costs.

What is upsetting and what most people do not know is...North Carolina government refuses to recognize fraud or Program Integrity as an essential component of service delivery...they have been warned and warned by the feds in numerous audits.

Social Services had (for about 4 years) an Inspector General (it was Brian Beatty to begin with) but the Democrat political winds quickly and quietly eliminated the entire office...and that was during fiscally good years.

Iam glad they caught her. Now maybe she and ever one else will think twice before trying to use the state to live off

  • suckafree23 Jul 13, 2009

Ok she has state/federal assistance and she lives with her parents in a $300,000 home, but the child lives in PA. She must have learned it from her parents cause they were right there watching it all go down.
