Raleigh woman charged with assaulting, injuring 7-year-old child

— A Raleigh woman was arrested Saturday and charged with assaulting and severely injuring her 7-year-old child, authorities said.

Shawna Lea Sowder, 42, of 208 Mount Vernon Church Road, is charged with one count of felony intentional child abuse and assault on a child under the age of 12. According to warrants, Sowder hit the child, grabbed the child's throat and broke the child's arm on Nov. 15.

Sowder was jailed under an $85,000 secured bond. She was expected to make her first court appearance Monday.

    It is unbelievable that the Wake County DA's office would charge a child's biological mother with child abuse. There must have been a television camera involved in it. Normally, thanks to Interact, women in Wake County have free reign to assault, beat, and other physically abuse their child with impugnity.

    If she actually did this, I hope the judge will look beyond simply punishing her, and find a solution that protects the poor child. Ugh! Everyone makes mistakes, loses their cool, needs help now and again, but I have a low tolerance for violence against children.
