Raleigh woman accused of burning 3-month-old

Posted February 5, 2013

— A Raleigh woman was arrested Monday on accusations that she intentionally burned a 3-month-old child left in her care.

Mercedes Evette Norman, 19, of 3701 Marshlane Way, was charged with one count of intentional child abuse causing serious bodily injury.

According to an arrest warrant, burns from hot water left the child – Norman's second cousin – with burns on 8 percent of its body, including its buttocks, left ankle and thigh.

Norman was jailed under a $100,000 bond and was scheduled to make her first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

ncdime1235... You hit the nail squarely on the head. It's time for this welfare cycle to stop. It isn't fair to the children either, who grow up angry without fathers and turn to a life of crime that we are seeing in the paper every day. Also, it's time for men to stop impregnating these women! Ever hear of using protection?

Thank you Outspoken for shedding light on this incident. I completely understand how this can happen. A 3 months olds skin is so thin, and fragile that what we would consider hot-warm, could be scalding for them. Also, the baby bathtubs come with a sling. She may not have noticed that the baby was uncomfortable until she laid the bay in the sling and got down on her knees to prepare to bathe the child. Either way...I pray for healing for all people involved. Emotional, and physical.

Her Attorney should be ashamed of herself, how dare you say that a mother of 5 accidentally burned that baby !!! As a mother ya know when the water is at the right temp. for an infant!!! I hope she does some serious time in jail, our justice system needs to protect the young and innocent !

22 with 5 kids? Here lies the origination of this problem. Why do these girls keep having children they can not afford? I personally had to wait 5 years in between my kids because I could not afford to have 2 in daycare. NEVER in my life have I ever asked for governmental assitance. Not that I couldn't have used it, but I felt there were others out there who needed it more. Why do we encourage these girls to continue having more children? More children, more benefits. I know a woman right now, with 6 children and 5 "baby daddies". She lives in a nice 2 story home, paid for by the government and only works part time. Welfare needs to be revamped! If you come to welfare with 2 kids, then 2 kids is your max. It's obvious you can't afford the ones you have, so don't have anymore. If this mother was responsible, she wouldn't need her cousin to watch the baby. She would be able to afford quality child care. As for the cousin, TEST the water before you put the baby in it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that is mine. God bless you!

OutSpoken, a baby does not get burns on 8 percent of the body without the person intentionally doing it. As soon as she put the first foot in the water that baby would have been screaming from the pain! You would have to be completely incompetent to continue to put the baby in the bath water!
