Skate for free in downtown Raleigh with the donation of canned goods or winter clothing next Monday.

From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, at the Raleigh WinterFest Ice Rink on City Plaza, the public is invited to make a monetary donation; bring in toys, gently used or new jackets, blankets, scarves and winter hats; or give four canned goods per person. Participants can skate for free if they bring the required items in.

Polar Ice House will have instructors on the ice to offer free skating lessons for kids and adults  from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The day includes live performances by musical groups, including The RazzaMaJazz Dixieland Band, Carpe Deim Sax Quartet and others, from noon to 7 p.m. There also will be raffles of gifts and cash donations throughout the day.

The donations will be delivered to the Raleigh Rescue Mission, Sheppard's Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army, Healing Place, Women's Center and other location charities on Dec. 18.
