The Raleigh Youth Council and Raleigh Police Department are hosting a mock crash event for teenagers on May 8 in an effort to hammer home the importance of safe driving.

Something to think about: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. In 2010, the centers report, seven teens ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries. That is Each. Day.

The event is 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., May 8, at Millbrook Exchange Park on Spring Forest Road. The event will include a mock crash with emergency responders demonstrating what could happen if teens make the wrong decisions behind the wheel. Teens also will learn about safe driving practices and the dangers associated with distracted driving with activities and presentations, according to the city.

The city will offer cash prizes for high school groups and clubs that bring the most teens and signed pledges. And there's free food.

Groups should register by May 1 ... that's Wednesday.

This is the pledge that teens will be asked to sign:

  • I pledge to be responsible while in a vehicle whether driving or riding.
  • I pledge to hold my friends and family responsible while I’m in the vehicle.
  • I pledge to watch my speed and buckle up.
  • I pledge to avoid distractions, like texting, eating, loud music, etc.
  • I pledge to stay awake, avoid drowsy driving and stay alert while driving at night.
  • I pledge to remember the effects alcohol and drugs can have when driving.
  • I pledge to be responsible so I and others can be safe while we ride and drive.
