Raleigh to fix tornado damage to iconic acorn
The giant acorn that Raleigh uses to ring in the new year at the annual First Night festival is slated for repairs.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The giant acorn that Raleigh uses to ring in the new year at the annual First Night festival is slated for repairs.
The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to pay sculptor David Benson $3,400 to install three new copper panels on the 1,250-pound, steel-and-copper acorn.
The acorn, which spends 364 days of the year in Moore Square downtown, was damaged during the April 16 tornado that swept through Raleigh, officials said.
During Artsplosure’s First Night Raleigh celebrations on New Year’s Eve, the acorn is lowered from a crane downtown to mark the countdown to the new year.
