Raleigh takes to the streets to recruit summer job candidates

City officials say there are currently 150-200 positions available.

"So, we have lifeguard positions, camp staff, camp directors, camp counselors, things like that," said Kent Hunt, recreation program director.

The city is looking to fill the jobs as soon as possible. Officials say applications are down 30 to 40 percent from last year.

"We started looking at some of our numbers in March and we noticed our application rate for some of those summer seasonal jobs were below what we had last year. We were a little concerned about that," said Robert Jones, talent acquisition manager.

So, the city of Raleigh got creative and put electric signs along Western Boulevard.

"We were hoping that being right beside the school, NC State, we could attract some college students to apply for some of our jobs," Hunt said.

Now they're hoping that passersby and anyone else interested, takes notice.

"We know the kids are out there. We know the workforce is out there, just the applications aren't quite where we'd like them so we're putting in the work to get the word out," Jones said.

City officials said they have also set up in high schools in an attempt to recruit high school students.
