Raleigh seafood market gets permit to repair tornado damage
Business owners near downtown Raleigh are struggling to reopen their doors three weeks after a powerful tornado carved a path of destruction along South Saunders Street.
Posted — UpdatedEarp's Seafood Market on South Saunders Street was condemned after the April 16 storm. The owner faced large expenses to bring a new building, existing driveways, sidewalks and landscaping up to current building codes.
The Raleigh Board of Adjustment granted a special use permit allowing the owner to just make minor repairs to sidewalks, driveways and landscaping. The new building will have to meet current building standards.
Owner Nancy Earp Salmon hopes to have the seafood market reopened in September.
The business was covered by insurance, which has helped pay the five employees while the store is rebuilt.
Salmon's parents opened Earp's Seafood Market 43 years ago, and it has gained local fame for its flounder fillets.
