Raleigh police: Worker stepped in road, struck by vehicle

— Raleigh police say a man working on Avent Ferry Road wasn't paying attention, stepped in front of a car and was struck sometime before 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Arnulso Martinez, 48, is expected to be OK, police said. He works for a company contracted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to do resurfacing work.

The driver does not face charges.

    How can someone step in the road if they are working in the road?? I would understand stepping out of the road. Doesnt make sense.

    If workers resurfaced roadways from 8-5, poeticallycorrect-InvNo1, the DOT and it's contractors would be in more danger. Daytime hours mean more drivers, and rush hour back ups make for more MAD drivers.

    A lot of roadwork happens overnight to keep traffic congestion to a minimum. Highway 55 in Apex is being repaved from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Not a bad idea, but he should have been paying attention, whether it was 2 a.m. or 2 p.m.
