RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police are on alert Super Bowl Weekend for drunken drivers, having arrested at least 18 people by Saturday morning.

Some national studies have found that the weekend produces a higher-than-average number of car crashes and that alcohol is often a factor.

The police department's DWI squad, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, issued nearly 43 charges early Saturday at a checkpoint on Glenwood Avenue.

In addition to the 18 DWI violations, for example, four people were charged with driving after consuming while under 21 and three people were charged with driving while license revoked.
