Raleigh police on alert for impaired drivers

Posted February 2, 2014

— Raleigh police are on alert Super Bowl Weekend for drunken drivers, having arrested at least 18 people by Saturday morning.

Some national studies have found that the weekend produces a higher-than-average number of car crashes and that alcohol is often a factor.

The police department's DWI squad, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, issued nearly 43 charges early Saturday at a checkpoint on Glenwood Avenue.

In addition to the 18 DWI violations, for example, four people were charged with driving after consuming while under 21 and three people were charged with driving while license revoked.

The probable cause for these "checkpoints" being that the "suspect" had the misfortune of being on Glenwood Blvd.

"The police are no better than any other organized crime family"- not true at all, you can actually negotiate with mobsters!! In the end though, don't be wanted, don't drive around with expired tags etc or drunk and you got nothing to worry about.

These checkpoints are not a waste of time IMHO. The numbers are always significant and to be quite frank I wish they'd do more of them. It always amazes me how many times these checkpoints lead to something other than a DWI charge, such as a seat belt violation or capturing a fugitive from justice. In a nutshell, they work.

Drunk drivers should be arrested, have their licenses revoked, whatever...That is not what this is about. They have turned the police into tax collectors who's job it is to shake down the public for whatever they can. The police are no better than any other organized crime family.

glad you guys made city a lot of money ruining peoples lives last night! Maybe patroling for truly drunk drivers that cant keep their car straight is a better idea than ruining lives of people who had 3 or 4 beers and were totally fine to drive. unconstitutional check points should be banned!!!

Thanks RPD! and keep up the good work. Remember that you don't need to use a national holiday as an excuse to do your job.
