Raleigh police: Man stabbed driver in the neck

Raleigh police arrested a man who was accused of stabbing a driver in the neck with a pen or pencil early Wednesday.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police arrested a man who was accused of stabbing a driver in the neck with a pen or pencil early Wednesday.

Officers charged Donnell Lamont Smith, 30, with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Andrei Vass, 57, of Norlina, told police he met Smith at the Buckhead Saloon in Raleigh and agreed to drive him to a shelter. When Vass asked him to get out of the car, Smith stabbed him in the neck, authorities said.

Vass flagged down an officer on West Hargett Street and told him what happened. Police later found Smith and arrested him.

Vass underwent surgery at WakeMed, police said. He was expected to survive.
