— The Raleigh Police Department on Wednesday unveiled the newest additions to its fleet of approximately 900 cars, SUVs and trucks.

The department bought 67 vehicles – mostly Ford Interceptors and Chevrolet Caprices—to replace the well-known Crown Victoria, which Ford discontinued in 2011.

The new vehicles will be fitted and rotated into service along with dozens of Interceptors and Dodge Chargers bought last year.

The police department tested several models before making its decision.

All three vehicles have better miles-per-gallon figures than the Crown Victorias and are comparably priced.

More than 500 vehicles in the police department's fleet are patrol vehicles.

"Raleigh PD needs some fast vehicles to race down to the donut shop." - ITLSSS

Have you seen the Bruggers Bagels on Hillsborough St at 7:30am? You see RPDs racing up the street to be 1st in line.

Old RPD Vics never die......some of 'em end up as cabs in NYC!

So, Raleigh debuts their new cruisers, which WRAL says are Ford Interceptors and Chevy Caprices. The picture they use with the story is of a Doge Charger. Raleigh has had a few of those for a while now. I guess if they all are blue with white roofs, who can tell the difference? What does anyone care about accuracy and consistency?

Keep in mind some of these are spares that are distributed across the board; i.e. detective vehicles, patrol vehicles, admin vehicles, etc...

Wrong. Raleigh has far more that 500 patrol officers. The ratio is about 1.5 to 1.

I don't get how a city (large town, really) the size of Raleigh needs 500 patrol vehicles? I have to assume it's a 1 officer:1 car ratio?

I have a 96 and drive it to this day. We have a newer ford and it is a piece of junk, I can tell it won't last.

I wonder if they will be rolling any old ones out of service... A worn out Crown Vic can still be pretty good.
