Raleigh police cruiser hits utility pole

Posted September 23, 2010

— A Raleigh police officer responding to a foot chase crashed into a utility pole on Poole Road early Thursday.

Officer Edward Reeves lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center lane and hit a utility pole near Ashford Street around 5 a.m., Capt. Chris Bertram said.

Reeves was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at WakeMed Hospital, Betram said. He required some stitches and suffered a bruised leg.

Poole Road was closed between Donald Ross and Ralph drives while Bell South and Progress Energy crews inspected the damage to the utility pole.

Three lanes were reopened by early Thursday afternoon. One lane and a feeder road remained closed.

Actually RPD, you are mistaken, when the trainee crashed the Fire truck in Durham or Bahama (I forget which) and he was not cited, I did make a stink, they determined he was driving too fast for road conditions. SO before you shoot off your mouth know all you facts!!!

Man, I cannot get over all the police haters that visit this website. All the comments about wasting tax payers dollars and the officer needing more training. I mean come on, Police officers pay taxes also! As far as training goes, officers spend upwards of 180 hrs a month driving around "protecting" you hateful people, every now and then one may slip up. It only takes a second to get distracted. There are dozens upon dozens of collisions a day in this city that cause property damage. If your worried about wasted tax payers dollars, then tell the citizens who call 911 for non police related issues to stop demanding officers to show up to raise their 12 yr old kid who will not clean their room, or their wife who broke their cell phone, or how they don't understand why their car was repoed....ummmm because you did not pay your bill. All police are not out to take advantage of the "good ol" tax payers of Raleigh.... Get a grip!

Journey, what is your issue with the police?

I understand your argument that the officer does no good if he can not get to the scene. But why do you slam the police? You don't slam fire or EMS when they get in wrecks... not saying you should be slamming anyone, but why only the police?

The argument holds true for all public safety but you have a very obvious bias... why is that?

There was no reason to have that many police cars at this scene this morning. With that many there you would think at least a couple of them there would direct people to a detour.

I live in SE Raleigh, and RPD are always speeding around. In my neighborhood, I have seen two high speed chases that came from 440. I was so glad the kids were not out playing because one of them would have been killed. The RPD came from every street available to reach that one point. I think I am going to start documenting the RPD and their actions they get away with!

Agreed major806. I am curious if he will receive a ticket and what ever became of this "alleged" suspect being chased on foot? My guess (yes GUESS) would be that he got away because the officers had to assist this one involved in the crash. Just as the "alleged" speeder that the Trooper was chasing got away when the trooper crashed into an innocent Grandnmothers car killing 3 people. This excessive speed helps NO ONE!!!

Journey985, Very true, but at times speed is needed, but you (the officer)need to understand how to control the vehicle u drive, which this officer did not. This goes to training.

Works for me major806 - Who did this officer help??? NO ONE!!! He caused more damage and tied up more officers, EMS and Fire crews then he would have if he had just done the speed limit. So if it means they will actually GET to me when i need them by going slower, then so be it!!!
