RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh police officer woke Monday morning to discover that someone had spray painted his cruiser outside his home.

The words "I can't breathe" were painted in black on the passenger side of the car.

A Raleigh resident spotted the car on a tow truck outside Trader Joe's on Wake Forest Road and snapped a photo.

A police department spokeswoman said the officer called a tow truck to take the car to the police department's fleet services office for cleaning. On the way to deliver the car, the tow truck driver stopped to give another motorist a jump in the grocery store parking lot.

"I can't breathe" became a catchphrase for the Black Lives Matter movement after the July 2014 death of Eric Garner in New York City. Garner's last words – in a choke hold administered by New York City police in an attempt to arrest him – were captured on cellphone video. They have since been used by groups protesting police brutality.
