RALEIGH, N.C. — Mitchell Silver, who has overseen Raleigh's Planning and Development Office, was named Friday as parks commissioner in New York City.

Silver’s last day in Raleigh hasn't been determined, City Manager Ruffin Hall said. Deputy Planning Director Ken Bowers will serve as interim planning and development director.

"Mitchell has provided transformational planning leadership over his nine years of service to the City of Raleigh," Hall said in a statement. "Much of the recent development success in our community can be attributed to Mitchell’s vision and ideas. Mitchell’s efforts around innovation, planning and community building have been recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. Personally, I will miss his energy and creativity as we address future growth and development challenges."
