— The City Council on Tuesday approved plans for a downtown hotel that would have a rooftop bar.

The proposed 11-story Powerhouse Plaza, located on West Jones Street, across North West Street from the 42nd Street Oyster Bar, would have five stories of offices and a hotel with 134 rooms and an indoor pool, according to a site plan.

A 5,440-square-foot rooftop bar would sit atop the building.

A six-level parking deck with 397 spaces would be located on the northern portion of the site, between Harrington and West streets.

Can you please get out of the puritan stone age and bring back happy hour?

    The ignorance is strong here...

Why complain about condos in the comments for a story about a building that won't have any?

Comparing Rudino's Rooftop, the Clarion's enclosed bar, the private club bars (Cardinal, Capital City), or the unmentioned "hybrid" -- the outdoor bar on the second floor of Foster's in Cameron Village -- to a rooftop bar on an 11 story builing is silly. Solas on Glenwood South will have a "rooftop" bar on its 3rd story when it opens.

Traffic? The idea is that bar patrons will be staying in the hotel (or other ones nearby), live nearby in Cameron Park or the condos (Quorum, West, 222, 510, etc.), or use the upcoming downtown circulator.

I'd rather people stay in a hotel near Glenwood South than drive while tired and/or intoxicated.

"Where are the grocery stores downtown?"

We have a grocery store downtown---Capital City Grocery at Seaboard Station. It's well-stocked and even has live music on the porch on Friday nights.

Wonderful- as if driving in that area isn't insane on the weekends as it is now! You can't widen any of these roads and the pedestrian traffic is so bad now that people cannot even safely cross the street.

The Clarion doesn't have a rooftop bar. It has a top-floor bar. Bit of a difference there. T

here are other places to drink high in the sky, though, such as the Cardinal Club, or whatever parking deck you feel like taking a 40 up on.

I'm sorry, but Rudino's Rooftop is not the same as a bar on top of a 11 story building. And, I think the original poster was trying to say "in downtown Raleigh" there are no roof top bars currently. I guess you could say the Clarion has one, but I guess nobody goes to it.

I will buy that Roof Top Bar - One Beer At The Time.

Sounds nice, but could be taller. Downtown Raleigh needs more skyscrapers".

I agree. Why they just had to put Soleil Center behind Crabtree is utterly ridiculous.

i agree with both comments. downtown has a few tall builders and they have gaps between them when you see it from a distance. downtown doesnt even have too much of an appealing skyline.

The building looks nice but architects need to start using their imaginations more. I see nothing unique in its design based on that rendering.

There are plans in the works for more rooftop bars downtown. Just what we need...more bars. Where are the grocery stores downtown? Couldn't they use one of the lower flors to put in a Harris Teeter or a Whole Foods?!
