Fox hunt over: Raleigh animal believed to be 'aggressive' fox caught

A woman told emergency dispatchers she was walking on the 1400 block of Courtland Drive when the animal attacked her.

"I saw a fox and he ran at me, screamed and bit my leg," said the woman, name Chris, who only gave her first name. "I fought him off with a trash can. You have to get shots, but I was just scared for my health. But I am fine, and I will be fine."

Chris said she has already received more than a dozen shots, and will need more to guard against rabies.

Police said the fox also chased a jogger on Courtland Drive and bit the shoe of a child on the 1400 block of Wake Forest Road. Both people were not hurt.

Gayle Lowry, who lives in the area, wondered if the same fox attacked her pet.

"My neighbor saw a fox go after my cat," she said. "She's got multiple wounds that they stitched up, but otherwise she is going to be alright."

The fox will be tested for rabies, police said.

"While the fox's capture reduces the imminent concern for the area, residents are asked to remain on the alert over the coming days in case other aggressive and potentially diseased animals are nearby," Raleigh police said in a statement.

Neighbors said it's not unusual to see wild animals in the area, but now they will view them differently.

"They need a place to live too, but they are migrating into these areas," Lowry said.
