Raleigh offers $5,000 reward for grease snitches
In an effort to reduce the amount of grease and other substances illegally discharged into sewers, the City of Raleigh on Tuesday said it is increasing its cash reward for catching people who deliberately clog the system.

The reward amount is now $5,000 for information leading the arrest, citation or conviction of anyone illegally discharging into the sewer system. The incentive program began in 2010 with a $1,000 reward, but the program failed to generate interest, officials said.
Clogs from grease can lead to sewer overflows, which are costly and potentially hazardous. The city currently spends more than $7 million a year on sewer maintenance.
“Grease continues to be a problem that plagues the city’s sanitary sewer collection system and pump stations, causing many of those spills. The city is continuously looking for ways to reduce the amount of grease entering the collection system from all sources and reducing the number of (sanitary sewer overflows) attributed to grease,” the city said in a statement.
The reward program is open to all city employees and the general public. Employees whose duties include discharge detection would not be eligible for the reward unless they participate outside of work.
