RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man charged with killing a woman in their apartment over the weekend was charged Tuesday morning with assaulting a Wake County detention officer doing security checks.

An arrest warrant alleges that Wedjunald Gemeille, 21, hit the officer, causing severe injuries, including swelling to the bridge of his nose and right hand and bruising to his left eye and right side of his neck.

He was charged with one count of assault on an officer inflicting serious injury.

Gemeille was in the Wake County jail after his arrest Sunday on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Angel Irby.

Authorities have not released any details about their investigation in the case, but a 911 call in the case released Monday indicates that Gemeille went to a church near their home, said that he assaulted his girlfriend and that he thought she might be dead.

According to court records, Gemeille is also awaiting trial on misdemeanor charges of assault on a female and assault inflicting serious injury stemming from a November 2012 incident. Details surrounding that case, however, are unclear.

He was also arrested in July 2010 and charged with murder in connection with the death of Pier Munoz-Chinos, 31, of Raleigh, but that charge was later dismissed and the arrest expunged from his record.
