My younger daughter and I stumbled on a fun little holiday treat the other day - the big gingerbread house at the Raleigh Marriott City Center in downtown Raleigh.
This is the third year that the hotel's culinary team has put together the project, Dale Bullock, director of operations, tells me. It goes up around Thanksgiving and comes down on New Year's Eve. The house sits in the lobby right next to the interior entrance to Starbucks.
The house is made of real gingerbread and buttercream. The roof is sugar cookies. Candy dots the entire house and roof. It's a fun thing to check out if you happen to be downtown for Nutcracker, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Winterfest or another activity!
Here is what it takes to make this gingerbread house. Just about everything is made in house!
150 pounds of flour
200 pounds of sugar
20 pounds ginger
75 pounds butter
200 pounds of powder sugar
600 sugar cookies
150 pounds of classic candy
20 pounds of licorice
40 pounds gumdrops
The hotel is at 500 Fayetteville St. in downtown Raleigh.
