Raleigh man killed in watercraft accident

Posted July 24, 2009

— A Raleigh man died Thursday when two personal watercraft collided on the Intracoastal Waterway near the N.C. Highway 50 bridge to Surf City, authorities said.

Thomas Petrie, 52, was piloting one watercraft when it was hit on the left side by another personal watercraft that was piloted by a 51-year-old relative, said Doug Jones, an officer with the state Wildlife Resources Commission. The watercraft were traveling at 10 to 20 mph at the time of the collision, he said.

Petrie was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, in Wilmington, where he died of his injuries, Jones said.

Both men were wearing life jackets, Jones said. No other injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation.

My condolences to the family. Be very safe when on the waters. If you don't know then learn before getting in or on the waters.

This article wasnt posted to find out your opinion on pwc, jet skis,or boats. Or how you feel about the people riding them. I guess none of you have ever made a mistake. Accidents happen to everyone. I am sure the family of this man appreciates the "stupid" comments on here. To the family, our thoughts and prayers go out to you.

    Experience would have proven essential...

PWC, Jet Skis, Wave Runners whatever you want to call them, are no more dangerous than any other vehicle or craft. Inexperienced or stupid riders are the issue. There are rules to boating just like driving and if you abide by the safe distance and speed recommendations, these accidents don't happen. If these folks had stayed far enough apart this tragedy would not have happened. http://www.boat-ed.com/nc/course/index.htm
