BENSON, N.C. — A Raleigh man died Wednesday evening when his SUV flipped on the median of Interstate 40 in Johnston County, authorities said.

Ramsis Matta Soliman, 58, was west bound on I-40 near Benson at about 5:15 p.m. when his 2006 Ford Expedition ran off the side of the road. State Highway Patrol troopers said he overcorrected, and the SUV overturned, crossed the median and landed upright near the eastbound lanes.

Paramedics tried to revive Soliman, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Amel Selwanes of Raleigh, was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment of injures that weren't considered life-threatening, authorities said.

I-40 was shut down for 30 minutes in both directions.
