Raleigh man faces statutory rape charge

Posted July 30, 2012

— An 18-year-old Raleigh man was arrested Sunday on accusations that he had sex with a 14-year-old girl, according to an arrest warrant.

DeShonte Lequan Jones, of 7101 Sandy Forks Road Apt. 2A, faces one count of statutory rape of a person more than four but less than six years younger than the accused.

Jones was placed in the Wake County jail under a $75,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday.

If he posts bond, he is ordered to not have any contact with the girl.

What a crock. I dread the day my daughter is a freshman and brings home a senior boyfriend. But I certainly wouldn't call the sheriff about it. Poor kid, now he's a sex offender for life. Precisely why I'm not terribly concerned about dumb registry showing 400 offenders within 5the miles of everywhere. Enough is enough.

But she said she was 28.

There just seems to be something WRONG about this. I just don't think that 2 people who are close enough in age where they could be at the same school, engaging in sexual relations, should lead to the older child being charged with a crime. I think it shows poor judgment (what, an 18-year-old with poor judgment??!!) but not a crime that could lead to him being sentenced as a sex offender, which would follow him his entire life.

The headline was Broughton HS student, now it is Young Man. Is the young man a Broughton HS student or not. Probably doesn't make any legal difference, but it sounds better if it was a student on student crime.

Does his birthday make him 4 years and 1 day older than the girl?

I imagine this was consensual and this young man shouldn't have his life ruined for doing what kids do. For those of you with 14 year old girls, if you don't want her doing what this girl did, you'd better watch them closely.

There's no need to fill our prisons even fuller with these non-crimes.

This is absurd. We shouldn't be arresting young men for consentual sex with their classmates. Do we really need to imprison every senior who dates a freshman?
