ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. — A Raleigh man died Friday after drowning off Atlantic Beach, emergency officials there said.

John Ira Moore, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a representative with the Atlantic Beach Fire Department.

Details of the incident weren't clear Friday evening, but authorities said the drowning happened around 4 p.m. along a relatively busy area of the beach where there are no lifeguards.

Moore's body was taken to the local medical examiner's office for an autopsy. His wife, Elizabeth, said he might have had a heart attack.

The couple owned a condo at Atlantic Beach and were there on vacation, she said.

Moore was retired from the North Carolina Facility Services, where he had reviewed the condition of care in nursing homes across the state.
