Raleigh man charged after child found sitting on gun

Posted November 29, 2010

— A Raleigh man faces a misdemeanor child abuse charge after police found a child sitting on top of a loaded handgun in his home.

Alan Errol Atwater Jr., 25, of 3062 Morgans Mill Court, was also arrested Sunday on a number of gun and drug charges, according to arrest warrants.

Police say Atwater had a loaded 9 mm handgun under a couch cushion where his girlfriend’s child was sitting when officers went to the home on Sunday.

Police seized marijuana from the house and a stolen handgun, according to the warrants.

According to state Department of Correction records, Atwater was convicted in Alamance County in 2005 on misdemeanor drug charges, as well as misdemeanor charges of resisting an officer and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was in the Wake County jail Monday morning under a $28,000 bond.

Way to go he needs the Parent of the Year award. I'm sure that's not the first time he's put his kid in harms way. Can we turn the tables and lets sit him on a loaded gun? He's really making his momma proud.

Once he do get out of jail, he will do the same thing again. Because he is a REPEATER.

So - who responsibility is it to protect me?

Lets protect the children first, and then YOU. Don't have a loaded gun around any child. What if the child found that gun and killed himself or someone else. Put a lock on that gun and unload it too. Be safe.

This child certainly needs to be moved from the home for safety reasons. Why would the mother would want to be with a man like that? She puts her child in danger and mostly likely gave no thought of it.

Great combination, marijuana, unsecured and loaded weapons, and kids. Sheesh!

So - who responsibility is it to protect me? It's my responsibility and it's my right to bear arms. You can try to re-write the Constitution all you want but it's plain and simple. Stop trying to muddy the issue here. Criminal behavior is criminal behavior. Constitutional rights are Constitutional rights.

You can say all you want about the misinterpretation of the right to bear arms....Please read and understand the social and historical context of those words. I assure you that at the time it was written, no one would have conceived of the proliferation of these handguns, nor the threat they pose to all of us. It was about a militia and posed in a very different time. The arming of criminals to do harm passively or with intent against law abiding people was not the issue then and should not be now.

He and all people who are charged with child abuse charges should receive felonies... NOT misdemeanors!
