I often get emails from parents looking for summer activities and camps for their teens around this time of year.

Daniel Price, teen program director for Raleigh parks, sent these over the other day. Here's what they have lined up:

  • Campus Crusin’, July 15 to July 19, at Kiwanis Park. A self-exploration program designed to assist students in gaining a greater awareness of institutions of higher education in North Carolina. Personal interest surveys, enhancing your resume, and campus tours to many of North Carolina's private and public universities are coupled with new friendships and a college atmosphere. This is a great chance for students to find a school that will prepare them for their future career! Campus tours include NC State, ECU, UNC, Elon, Barton College, Wake Tech, NC Central, UNC-W, UNC-G, and Duke. For ages 14 to 17. Fee: $150.
  • Teen Corps, June 24 to June 28, at Kiwanis Park. This service camp is a perfect opportunity for teens looking to fill community service requirements for school and have a great time too! The beginning of the week will focus on team building and leadership development to prepare the Teen Corps for the service ahead. Service opportunities will focus on rewarding activities that will be both fun and challenging. There will be a reward on Friday to celebrate their experience. For ages 14 to 17. Cost: $150.
  • Youth Fire Academy, July 22 to July 26, at Kiwanis Park. Led by City of Raleigh Firefighters, participants will visit local fire stations to learn about firefighting and see just how tough the job can be. Classroom and physical fitness challenges along with interactive activities and field trips will highlight a week of fun and learning. Take this amazing opportunity to handle the tools and equipment used by actual firefighters and see if you have what it takes! For ages 12 to 14. Cost: $150.
  • Teen X-Treme, June 11 to Aug. 16, at Lions Park and Marsh Creek Park. This camp provides a structured recreation curriculum designed for teens that includes both indoor and outdoor activities. Participants will participate in arts and crafts, recreational games, team building, athletics, and other fun activities. An offsite field trip and trip to the pool are offered each week. Please note that Lions Park will run from June 11 through August 9 and Marsh Creek will run from June 17 through August 16. For ages 12 to 14. Cost: $80 per week.
