The Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market oopened for the season a few weeks ago. And while downtown workers are among some of its main shoppers, it's also drawing families, downtown residents and others with special events and promotions.

The market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesdays, through Oct. 29, at 400 Fayetteville Street, and features a variety of fresh produce, baked goods and other foods. I used to walk down there when I worked downtown to pick up something for dinner. I've also stopped by with my own kids after a summer morning at Marbles or the natural sciences museum.

Lacie Lindstaedt, director of communications and membership for the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, tells me that among the special events planned this year will be some programming for kids, including Marbles giveaways, a storytime session, crafts, scavenger hunts and other activities.

On the schedule this Wednesday is a family-friendly scavenger hunt for a chance to win four tickets to Marbles. There also will be farm-fresh recipes and live music from singer-songwriter Jason Ross. It's 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday.
