RALEIGH, N.C. — The Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market starts its season on Wednesday.

The market will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday at City Plaza on Fayetteville Street. The season ends on Oct. 30.

To help kick off this year's season, they are holding a pig pickin' celebration, which means $5 barbecue sandwiches from The Pit!

Also tomorrow, Southern Food expert Bob Garner will be on hand to discuss and provide samples of Brunswick stew.

There will also be children's activities and raffles/giveaways.

Bluegrass band Old Habits will provide music.

Here's a look at some of the other highlights this season:

  • July 3: Tomatolicious Day
Seven local restaurants competed in a grilled cheese cook-off at the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market on Aug. 1, 2012.
  • Aug. 14: Cheese Please - Last year, this meant a grilled cheese cook-off and lots of samples!
  • Oct. 2: Honey Buzztival - celebrating all things honey with samples, hives and more!
  • We are still waiting on the complete schedule!

The last Wednesday of every month is "Wellness Wednesday." It will feature health screenings, free recipes, nutritional information, tastings and chef demonstrations.
