RALEIGH, N.C. — The city and the state Department of Transportation plan to join forces on a $7.1 million project to improve Tryon Road from Par Drive to South Wilmington Street, officials said Thursday.

The improvements along the 1.1-mile stretch of road include replacing a bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad corridor, realigning Tryon Road through the Renaissance Park development and widening existing portions to four lanes. Construction is expected to start this spring.

Raleigh will pick up $1.8 million of the tab, using money from a 2011 transportation bond.
