RALEIGH, N.C. — As a series of snow days put waste collection schedules on hold, trash and recycling piled up in households and along curbs around the capital city.

Crews began pickup Thursday afternoon and played catch-up throughout the day Friday and Saturday. They will work through Sunday, weather permitting, in an attempt to get back on track for Monday morning.

"It's been a tremendous challenge," Frederick Battle, director of Raleigh's Solid Waste Services, said Wednesday. "Last week, we started out on the routes, but due to weather, particularly with ice and roads being so slick, we had some safety concerns."

Battle said workers from the city's public works, public utilities and parks and recreation departments were assisting his department to collect trash and recyclables so a normal schedule can resume Monday.

Raleigh residents should place all garbage and recycling bins at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on their normal day of collection. They should also leave any overflow garbage at the curb as well, although that might not be collected the same day.

The city says it will not issue any fines until garbage collection returns to a normal schedule.

Yard waste collection is suspended until March 3.
