Raleigh couple hears boom, smells smoke during house fire

Posted May 28, 2009

— Firefighters were battling a blaze at a house at 8400 Old Well Lane Thursday morning. Heavy fire was reported in the attic.

Sue Thompson said she and her husband heard a small boom in their house around 6:45 a.m. When they got up to check it out, they smelled smoke and were able to get out safely.

Thompson said they built the house in 1980 and they have insurance on it. They hope to repair the damages, she said.

There was no word on what caused the fire.

Seriously? Newsworthy? Glad they are fine but nothing else is happening? No shootings in Raleigh today?

Wonder if they were storing aerosal cans in the attic?

Maybe a bird (like a european starling) had built a nest in the attic and caused a short circuit? You want to be careful about those kind of birds--they are an invasive species that harm our local birds and they cause all sorts of damage to attics and roofs. Overseas my parents had a problem with them in the roof of a house they had just bought and when it was cleaned out there were 20 big garbage bags worth of nesting debris. That alone is a hazard, spontaneous combustion and lice!!

You think they keep their furnace in the attic?

  • iron fist May 28, 2009

I wouldn't think they would be using a furnace. But some may need more heat.

I'm no expert here, but I'd say that there's a good chance that whatever caused the boom also caused the fire. :-)

Probably a gas leak or 29 year old furnace that finally died.
