— The state Department of Revenue announced Thursday that agents arrested a Raleigh couple on felony tax charges.

Thomas M. Jones Jr., 62, and Diane S. Jones, 63, both of 6112 River Meadow Court, were charged with three counts of attempting to evade or defeat tax.

According to arrest warrants, between 2004 and 2008, Thomas Jones and Diane Jones each allegedly filed three separate returns claiming they had no taxable income when, investigators claim, they did.

"The returns filed by the Joneses attempted to deceive the Department of Revenue and attempted to cause the state to issue tax refunds greater than they were entitled to receive," authorities said in a news release.

The couple is out of jail, each on a $9,000 bond.

"Taking the property of one person and giving it to another who has not earned it or has no right to it is theft, regardless of an act of congress."

Tell your grandma that when she goes to cash that Social Security check and uses her Medicare benefits to fill her Rx....

Can someone show me a ratified document stating we are required to pay taxes at all?

    "Tax evaders are greedy criminals"

cv - The greediest entity on earth is gov't. Is evading taxes wrong? Yes. But I would never call trying to keep what is rightfully yours greedy. Taking the property of one person and giving it to another who has not earned it or has no right to it is theft, regardless of an act of congress. Liberals are the greediest people on earth.

cvdurhm... EVERYONE - even those below 250K, will pay higher taxes now. Even Obama has conceded to that at this point. There's no way around that... not the way we are spending and funding all these agendas.

THEY ARE PROBABLY DRAWING A DISABILITY CHECK ALSO ALONG WITH THE OBAMA CARD FOR FREE FOOD.

"And what makes a million dollar mansion unreasonable? - colliedave

Nothing but you should pay more taxes. Our military and police budgets are to protect your McMansions and investments around the world. That's why the fair tax idea is really an un-fair-tax.

Everything you say could be true cvdurhm, but is also complete conjecture. Isn't it just as likely that they were desperately trying to keep what they've worked their whole lives to obtain as others here have suggested? Not saying it isn't a criminal act, but hardly enough to conclude it is a couple of "greedy Republicans". Your serve, cvdurhm!

"cv - post your name and address "

LOL - no thanks. I don't need stakers.

"We'll all look up your house and decide if it's "reasonable"."

The McMansion comment was towards the misleading GOLOer that said Obama is taking away everyone’s mortgage tax break. If anything they are considering phasing it out for high income earners >$250,000. Which I fall well below :P

"On Line search reveals Wake County's assessed value of the property listed in the article - bldg and land - to be $141,836. ... Feeling embarrassed over your uninformed" -yachtman

Embarrassed, Nope. Yachman you got far too much time on your hands. Whose to say that this is their only (or first) home. They could have a beach house on the outer banks or a FL condo. Tax evaders are greedy criminals no matter how much they are trying to save.
