RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh Charter High School senior died Sunday after falling on the eve of the school's graduation ceremony, according to an email from Principal Tom Humble to students, staff and parents.

Mehdy Hazheer, 18, was critically injured when he fell outside the school Friday night and hit his head on some bricks. A man who called to report the incident said Hazheer appeared to be trying to climb up the side of the building and fell about 10 to 15 feet.

The school's graduation ceremony was Saturday, and a teacher read the address Hazheer was to have made.

"In his work, he bridged communities and inspired his fellow students," Humble said of Hazheer, noting that he coordinated the school's relief efforts for tornado victims and Japan's tsunami victims, led the Interfaith Alliance and Social Justice Club and was a member of the National Honor Society.

"Mehdy was loved and respected by the students, faculty, and staff of Raleigh Charter High School," Humble said. "We feel a tremendous amount of sadness at our loss, and we are remembering Mehdy’s family during their grieving."

Hazheer was in WakeMed's neurological intensive care unit for two days before his death. He planned to attend Harvard University.
