The role is the chief pastor of the national church, responsible for strategy, administration and speaking for the church on issues of concern and interest.

Other nominees are: The Rt. Rev. Thomas Breidenthal, Diocese of Southern Ohio; The Rt. Rev. Ian Douglas, Diocese of Connecticut; and The Rt. Rev. Dabney Smith, Diocese of Southwest Florida.

In a statement on the diocese website, Curry called his competition "my brothers in Christ," saying any one of them "could provide faithful and capable leadership for the Church in this mission moment."

An election by the 300 members of the House of Bishops will be held on June 27, and the new presiding bishop would begin a nine-year term on Nov. 1.
