Raleigh annexes Angus Barn

Posted October 18, 2012

The Angus Barn may have always had a Raleigh address, but until this week it was located outside city limits.

Areas outside the city limits are governed by Wake County. The city continues to annex individual properties or groups of properties, but only on a voluntary petition basis.

Property owners who petition the city for annexation often want city services such as water, sewer and solid waste collection. Wake County doesn’t provide such services.

This is factually incorrect. The property on which the restaurant is located has been in the city limits for years.

I know the Angus Barn is a local landmark, but personally I don't think its that great. Of course the prices are extreme and will probably be more so now that the city has them.

"Perhaps they are looking to do more with the property/land itself, for which city service/zoning options will be favorable for them; further commercial development?"

Exactly, and being the Angus Barn, they WILL likely get a(t least a small) priority on services.

Given that and from a cost perspective, there's probably a better benefit in letting the city manage water and waste treatment as well.

Well seems silly to me but there must be some reason. Can't wait to see what it does to prices. Oh that's right - I cannot afford to go there anymore since our income has been cut yet again.

Perhaps they are looking to do more with the property/land itself, for which city service/zoning options will be favorable for them; further commercial development? It surely is for business benefit!

Yep, Angus Barn couldn't wait to pay more taxes. I remember when we were annexed. Our taxes doubled and our services cut in half. Details? We had twice a week garbage, now it's once a week. We have the same fire station as before. Police? Sheriff vs city. OK that may have been an increase. Water and Sewer? We had city water and sewer, and the cost did not decrease. Voluntarily annexed? Not our neighborhood.

"So the Angus Barn voluntary petition the city for annexation. That is kinda shocking." lec02572

I am sure that area is under Raleigh's Planning control or ETJ even though it is outside the city limits. If the Angus Barn proposed development on their lot a voluntary petiton is required. Kind of an oximoron but thats the rules. Happens most places.

Now that they will have to pay Raleigh city taxes will the cost of dinner increase proportionally?

  • davidgnews Oct 18, 2012

    Probably a great business move.
